This is No. 91 of Sylvia's Bridal Sampler Quilt. My new favourite! Its called 'New Mexico'.

This is the next one.... and below is the amount of bits to make this sweet innocent (!!!) 6" block. I'm not going through the book religiously (like some), at the moment I am picking and choosing.

We must be mad. How many hours does this take, you ask? Don't.
Some can take like 3 days!!! No not really that long, sometimes it seems that long, especially when there is a problem...

Sylvia's Bridal Sampler Quilt is growing.... only 48 and a half to go.....still there is no hurry.

The Garden Club

We are starting an applique group called the 'Garden Club' beginning February.
We will meet the second Tuesday of each month, 10am - 4pm.
I think the first day (Feb.) I will show you a few patterns and we can have a 'meeting' on whether we all do the same or otherwise.

Another year to look forward to...forget about the things we were supposed to do last year and look ahead. Its the only way.

2011 began with Kym having kidney stones, this year begins with him sick in bed with a chest infection....so much for New Years Eve! No, we didn't have plans anyhow... its just a busy time of year, workwise.
2011 we built a new room for The Patchwork Apple and moved in May.
2011 I did numerous quilt fairs all over Aust. as well as organising a quilt display of my own in Oct.
2011 a few 50th. birthday partys and heaps of (friends)new babies...(our second grandy due in Feb.!)
2011 Kym was asked to travel to USA and Chile, as he will also do in '12.
2011 Jessica and Sarah began their 'Red Cherry' patterns and now making lots of appliqued T Shirts. See their facebook page. They have a lot planned for '12, on the personal front.
2011 Olivia worked hard all year and begins a new chapter in the new year.
2011 Cherries were quite good. We finished Friday..thank goodness...its now 41C today, so if there were any left they would now be shrivelled! As well as us pickers! These pics. are 'Rainiers', a sweet light variety which we often don't pick due to bad weather.

So 2012...I'm not much on 'New Years Resolutions' except for the lose weight and get fit 'usuals' but as I previously blogged, I was going to plan ahead more, so I guess I have made a resolution for this year. yeh!
One thing I did plan, was to take Jemima to the Lobethal Pageant. The last couple years, we've missed, so now that Jemima is just old enough this was the Plan. Everyone else 'piked it' but Sarah and I. It was a lovely warm evening and little Jem loved it all. It was perfect.
She's also very busy with our new chooks. She calls them the 'brock brocks' !! Think about it...what does a chook say?
As well as our veggie garden. This pic is just the peas and raspberries but do we have some tomatoes!!

Its Cherry Time!

Well just lately, I have enjoyed some time in the garden. Something I haven't done in years. When I first joined Facebook, I put down as a hobby of mine..gardening... and my family thought it was hilarious. I said I 'enjoyed gardening', that didn't mean I did a lot of it! Well that was then. Now I do a fair bit. If its not doing major stuff, like spreading the mulch and weeding, it is little stuff like a bit of pruning here and there, or pulling weeds...there are ALWAYS

weeds. So the two pictures here, show the two beds I have weeded and put out new mulch in, so they are all fresh and pretty. Gradually I am adding more plants to the 'below' new garden which is next to the new shop. I am loving it. Our veggie patch is doing well too. Last week I picked the first of the raspberry crop, 200gm. and they keep coming. I will show pics. next time of the veggies perhaps.

Meanwhile after a couple of days here and there, we are now full swing into the cherry harvest. This is also something I haven't done in years. When the shop was new, I used to have 'harvest leave' to pick, while Annette manned the store.
I have on and off, done a bit during my Christmas break but this year is full on.
A light crop (which means not alot of fruit) but its excellent quality and sweet. This variety is Lapins. This was taken last week and they won't be ready to pick until Christmas Day. (which really means the day after Xmas). We have heaps of varieties, which vary in their ripening stages. Lenswood is virtually the last area to start harvest (in SA) hence we will still have cherries after Xmas. So far the weather has been kind, not too much rain to do much damage. Rain splits cherries. And not too hot, that splits me!! And the birds are keeping away, due to some sugar spraying.

Organisation is the key

Sometimes I wish I was as organised as my mother-in-law.
She's up at 6.30am. Washing and ironing done by 8am. Drive to post office for mail and pick up paper (for the crossword, of course.) Thursdays is shopping day. (She has even made her travel plans to rotate around Thursdays..) I can find her at certain shops at certain times on Thursdays, eg. bank at 9.30am. Hair on Fridays. I could go on and on... this has been the same for the 35years I have known her, so I could probably say her whole married life....60 years in January. It is perhaps obsessive to a point but I think it keeps her young. It keeps her going each day.
So as I have been thinking about this lately, I will be making a New Years resolution, to be more organised. (so I can grow old with ease) I am sort of organised for some things, not others. I am better under pressure and I don't think that's good, for me or my family.

So one plan will be to update my blog regularly....yeh, yeh, here we go again, I hear you say. I would like to log 'my life in Lenswood' for a year, so this way I can at least record by the way of the blog!Well that's the idea anyway. watch this space...

Quilts Revisited overview

At the beginning of the month I held an exhibition of Repro. quilts from our students from the past few years.
I must say I was extremely happy with how it all looked. With a theme like that, all the quilts enhanced each other.
Rhonda Mathews of Aldgate won the Viewers Choice with her delightful, 'Pond House' quilt.
Jessica looked after The Patchwork Apple shop. She had a display also of The Red Cherry Pattern Collection's quilts.
Beautiful refreshments were served by Sarah and friends, amongst my antique quilt collection.
Sarah and her 'clever' fella made this great little video of our exhibition. I hope this gives you an overview of how it all looked. All of you who didn't make it...this is only half of what you missed! Enjoy....

We have been rather busy getting ready for our first ever exhibition for The Patchwork Apple. A reproduction quilt extravaganza!! Due to the high amount of classes, BOM, patterns, etc. etc. in repro. fabrics, I decided to get a few of the quilts together and show them off.
All the pinning of sleeves have been done...we started tacking but we have done 32 so we ended up pinning....

I actually have attached 'some' labels to my own quilts. Should have been done years ago.

All the labels for each quilt have been printed...I hope.

Quilts have started arriving and its looking good!

So if you have some time over the weekend, come and visit us and have a browse.

The 'Paper Bag Challenge' was held last year. A small group of ladies participated and their interesting quilts will be displayed.

The Patchwork Apple will be onsite for sales.

The Red Cherry Pattern Collection will have their quilts on display also with patterns available.

In A P & Q this month I have an ad., showing off The Red Cherry Pattern Collection's new patterns...and my new logo.

I don't usually like full pages, a bit much... but this is rather good, including my profile.

Arriving yesterday are the new Moda Bakeshop boxes.

Cinderberry Stitches

Before I pack my bags and head over the border to Victoria, I thought I would quickly tell you that I'm going! Off to the Melbourne Craft and Quilt Fair, starting Thursday until Sunday. This year we have a special guest appearance by Natalie Lymer of 'Cinderberry Stitches' who will be signing her latest book, 'Cotton Floss'.
On our stand F30, we will have her samples
from her book to entice you!
The cutest of quilts with owls, bags, stitchery toy owls and toadstools.
Natalie will be there on Saturday 10am - 12noon. Why not come by and say hi!

Sydney Craft and Quilt Fair

Here's Vicki and I ready for the crowds @ Sydney Craft and Quilt Fair. Not looking too bad?
I had a bit of a trip getting there and am feeling a bit seedy at this stage.
Due to Volcanic Ash Cloud over Adelaide on Monday night my flight to Sydney was cancelled....(was due to fly out in the morning).

Within 2 hours of finding out this news, I had a bus trip to Melbourne booked and a flight from Melbourne to Sydney, packed my bag and was on the bus in Adelaide (35min drive)
on a horrible night of rain and wind. Had never travelled overnight before on a bus but it was okay. Not much sleep but I was lucky to have a spare seat next to me, so didn't really have too much to worry about. My 3 life savers, Kym chucked in a blow up cushion at the last minute and Sarah packed me a box of snacks. While Vicki picked me up (in the middle of a busy highway) @ 5.30am just out of Melb., so to catch the flight to Sydney in time.

Straight from airport to set up our booth. Then staggered to the wonderful Holiday Inn, Darling Harbour where we had a brillant stay for the rest of the week. Thanks to Darryl...with 2 Rs. The Red Cherry Pattern Co. was well received and our quilts made the booth look very bright and cheery.

I was very fortunate to attend the Leutenegger 120th. Birthday Cocktail Party on Saturday night at the Sydney Opera House! Absolutely wonderful. The magnificent views of Sydney Harbour, the food and drink and the people made it a night to remember. Congrats Chris and Fiona.

Monday was left for sight-seeing and enjoying the time with good food and coffee. A chance to stretch the legs and absorb the sights and sounds of my fav. city.

Wonderful displays (this one below of macarons) in the new Westfield Sydney Tower.

Fabulous food level and other stores. Vicki made a great discovery in Metallica clothing.

We also saw what all the fuss was about in Zara. Just to be cool! Yes, we saw it all!!

Now I'm back in the shop today and yesterday.

While I love Sydney, looking out my window now, while there's no twinkling lights and sparkling harbour and certainly no people, it's pretty hard to beat!

Launching The Red Cherry Pattern Co.

Last week we had a lovely couple of days, showing off my new store and introducing The Red Cherry Pattern Co.
Customers were encouraged to browse a room full of samples and patterns and indulge in scones and a cuppa. Lucky draws were often and everyone seemed pleased and the girls were happy to meet potential customers and get out there! The Red Cherry Pattern Co. are my two daughters, Jessica and Sarah....I'll produce some patterns too under this umbrella but mainly the girls are excited and producing quite a few designs spearheading young sewers and new mums.
So keep this Logo in mind!

Sponge worthy

On MasterChef the other day, they made a sponge. I was impressed with the contestants efforts but knew it wasn't really that difficult to make a sponge cake.

So I thought I would give it a go. Its been quite a number of years since I've made one....trouble was I didn't really have much for the topping. Frozen raspberries and grated chocolate on the top, raspberry jam and cream in the centre, was the go.... I was a bit impressed!

While the oven was on, I popped in a zucchini slice. Much to the delight of my family!!

Perhaps I should do this more often?

The Patchwork Apple, now back in Lenswood

All systems go!! We will be open tomorrow @ 9.30am. Yey!!! Very excited!!
Lots has been happening. Not only the work involved in getting the shop back together in a new building but going to AQC in Melbourne and then the Perth show in a couple weeks, life has been hectic. As we all know that is just the 'work' side of life...there is always the family life too, which keeps rolling, no matter what.
Thanks to my family, Kym who has been a huge support to me, especially realising I can be home from now on(!!) and the solid hard work every spare moment lately (even during harvest). To my girls, Sarah and Jessica (who are always there) and her husband Shayne for always dropping everything for his 'persistant' mother-in-law!! And to Olivia for keeping out of the way..
I feel like a Logie winner!!!
Anyhow, we will be open Tuesdays and Wednesdays 9.30am - 6pm from now on!!!

New Shop in May

Its April! Yes I know, its April. Im not open ...not until May now. Sorry (Nell) but unfortunately we've had hold ups and in a couple weeks I will be off to AQC in Melbourne, then there is Easter.... So I will be open for business @ my new location in May. Tiers Road, Lenswood.

Only 6km from the old shop.

Along the Woodside to Lenswood road, (Tiers Road) travel 6 km, passing Bonython Road on your right, we are the next house on the left. Once open I will have a sign out the front. Tuesdays and Wednesdays 9.30am to 6pm

We have added a new room/studio to the side of the house, especially for the shop. Very special.

A bit of 'fiddling' still to go, never lone the transfer of goods!! Looking good though. I hope you will all be happy and come visit.

Farewell to Woodside

I have only 3 days to go, here @ Woodside in The Apple Shed.
The move from Lenswood to Woodside in 2005 was huge for little ol' me. Honestly, I didn't think I would continue when Annette (my business partner) passed away back in 2000. Years passed and I was still surviving with alot of friends help. Moving meant having permanent help eg. Sara and Jessica and later Vicki..it meant more customers, sure but with that it meant longer hours and a whole lot more 'bookwork' (thanks Dianne) and alot more other issues.
But the journey has been fabulous. The new customers I have met, the hustle and bustle of 'the street' has all been invigorating.
The last few weeks (of the sale) has been what I would have liked all the time. A constant flow of people but unfortunately its not like that in reality, as any shop owner would know. That is not why I am moving back home...its just time...
Here is what my new 'shop' looks like! I will be trading from here every Wednesday as from April...I hope. Tiers Road, Lenswood. 6km from Woodside. Not far!
I will be attending the major Quilt Fairs around Australia, beginning in Melbourne for the AQC.
AND I will be getting in new 'stuff'.. don't worry about that.
I'm just scaling down...

Finally a big thank you especially to Sara for all your enthusiasm, inspiration, help and friendship over the last 7-8 years. Without you, I would have closed back then... The best of luck and good health to you and Lester in your retirement and travel.
To Vicki, who seemed to have flew in and flew out again but will certainly be apart of my life..even though we are now miles apart. Thank you for your humour, tireless help and friendship. I'll see you next @ AQC. (Vicki will be helping me @ the shows).
And to Jessica, my eldest daughter who always, when possible, helped me out.. with fabric as payment....gee I think you owe me some more work!!!
While Im going, I will thank the rest of the family, Kym, Olivia, Sarah and Shayne. There was always someone who helped when available and of course, put up with me...

More Tomatoes!!

Today was the day to take down the Tree. Usually I do it before New Years but this year was different. I'm not fussed about 'stuff' like I used to be.. so I think I'll just leave it a bit longer..besides I think it looks pretty.
In actual fact I was too busy today. First thing this morning I just finished getting The Patchwork Apple all 'sorted' for my last SALE ever...starting tomorrow. I just got home and there were unexpected visitors from Germany. Lovely family who came to see our cherries. So that was my day. Relaxing at least with a pub lunch as well. I was planning to clean windows too....no not really!

And this (below) is about all I did during my break... besides getting food prepared it seems. Sorry but I think that is the biggest hassle, every day (especially when one is home) and one's husband is home for lunch...is the preparation or rather the thinking-of-what-to-prepare for each meal....
Anyhow I did get some tomato sauce made!!! It took awhile.... in between doctor visits, suppositories given :/ (to the poorly-not me), flat tyres, water troubles in the garden, cherries to pick etc. etc. but I managed to make 5kg. -8 bottles. I know, big deal! It was a big deal for me, haven't made sauce for years. Jessica has already taken a bottle home and we had pasties for dinner last night, just to enjoy the sauce!! After all that the very next day, our Italian friend returned with more tomatoes!!
Sarah and I are obsessed with tomatoes on toast...just the smell starts you off then the taste. Delicious especially with the Lobethal Bakery's Tuscan loaf!! I can't keep this up...

Happy New Year to you all!

Had a very quiet one. Kym has been sick with a Kidney stone attack. Ambo. ride to hospital and a visit to Dr., all around New Years. Hes back on deck today at last. Right in the middle of cherry harvest too. Meanwhile I've enjoyed long walks and catching up on some DVDs and lots of visits from Jemima during my break..back to work Tuesday and I'll miss her. It won't be for long...

I am closing the Woodside store by end of Feb. Moving back home and will be on Line as well as doing a few Quilt Fairs around the country for the year. Thats the immediate plan anyhow.

Our Sale begins Tuesday 4th. with 30% off absolutely everything with some items even 50% off.

Store opens @ 9.30am until 5pm.- Tuesday to Saturday SALE will run until sold out.

Jessica and Shaynes Wedding Day

The Daylily Garden has a touch of my quilts on haybales, perfecting the setting. This is my old family home, so it makes it all very special. The girls grew up here as much as I did, played on the lawn, had picnics in the fairy garden. Mum would have morning/afternoon teas throughout the garden, in different little vignettes depending on the time of year and the weather. Heres the pile, ready to go. Jemima having a bit of no nappy time beforehand.

Jessica and Shaynes Wedding Day

Beautiful Sundowner apples with cardboard leaves for place settings, surround the vine twigs. Very significant for an apple grower's daughter and the groom who works on the vineyard!

The venue was perfect for the 'feel' we wanted. Party lights and lanterns helped create the atmosphere.

This is Kelly. Our tireless hairdresser and friend. Kelly did all of our hair so well and Olivia did all of the makeup to make us beautiful...it took awhile!!!

The day was just perfect. The girls and boys all looked wonderful. Jessica had planned her wedding beautifully and all went smoothly. I guess that is all we want on our wedding day. Here are all my girls, all looking so beautiful. Jessica and Jemima, Olivia and Sarah.

Wedding Bells are in the Air!

Sunday we had Jessica and Shayne's wedding rehearsal. Just an excuse for a Barbie, I reckon! The wedding party and... tag-a-longs or should I say... all important parties(!) hit our place for lunch then (us girls walked and the guys drove) to the Daylily Garden. The garden it perfect, thanks to Kaye and Trevor's hard work.

All systems are go this week. Jessica has been really busy and I'll say the rest of us will be this week! 'Its a Hoot' makes a great young persons quilt. 1 Layer Cake is required for this quilt.

'French General's' next range has arrived, 'Maison de Garance'. Rich chocolates with the traditional reds. Love the linens. We have chocolate- would love to do a stitchery with this with putty coloured thread.

Also love the 'squares of french icons' in burgundy on the putty coloured linen. I'm going to make a pin cushion from ...@ least one.

'The Adelaide Collection' has arrived. We have the full range by Adelaide's own Michele Hill which has been inspired by William Morris. Michele's new book is due to arrive next month. So many fabrics have come in lately..too many to show (bore) you.. I'll just mention a few by name. This one (below) is 'Punctuation' by American Jane. We have some 'Pure' by Sweetwater.. blue and brown. Also 'Bliss', 'Lizzie', 'Happy', Christmas prints inc. panel for Tree skirt. 'Little Pink Stars'.. these are gorgeous repros.

And a lovely range of Solids.

Lots of preparations here @ the Apple shed. Getting ready for the Adelaide Craft and Quilt Show next week. There's always that big question of what to take??

My DD1 gets married in 4 weeks, so there is that sort of preparations too. Thank goodness, she is a good organiser (and has the time) and doing it all. I'm struggling with a dress @ the moment. Thought it was going to be easy but really its not. There is that mauve 'Mother of the Bride' outfit I'm just not prepared to wear!!

Anyhow, I plod on.

What a wet day!

What a day of rain today! It has rained all day, hailed a bit and is bitterly cold. (I'm glad I'm inside!) Hasn't hailed much this year, yet. You can see it on my car as well as running down the drain. Today also brought the arrival of 'Luna Notte' by 3 Sisters for Moda. It is soft and muted and rather French!! I can picture the florals on old chateau's walls. Yummy.

We've had a quilt made in this range for awhile... Sara's design for a Layer Cake class as well as a pattern. So I was able to make an instant display.

Also in the same delivery were Fat Quarter Bundles, Jelly Rolls and Layer Cakes of 'A Morris Tapestry' by Barbara Brackman and 'La Petite Ecole' from French General.

So it was a great day for a change around and new fabric!

I've Finished!

Here is my finished top, 'Civil War Journey' quilt. I absolutely love it! I loved making it and I love it even more now its together. Just need it quilted now. It is a wonderful pattern of 6" blocks and with Sara's help during the class we all have the quilts finished. And now on to the next....

This gorgeous fabric range, 'Maison de Garance' by French General is my love at present. I am making blocks for the Sylvia's Bridal Sampler Quilt. Supposed to be 140 blocks of 6" blocks but we'll see about how many I'll make!!! Only 12 so far. (We do 6 blocks a fortnight.) So far they've been very easy, especially compared to the other quilt but I think from now on....it will get harder. I think it is for Anne's benefit, who is the newey in the class. I think we are protecting her.... or maybe misleading her!!

Going back to the delicious fabric. This is (was) a fat quarter bundle, we have Layers and Jellys in stock, with more arriving in October. There will also be a yummy chocolate linen. We had this class the other day, 'Scalloped Edge'. This is Kerrie's quilt by the end of the day! A great class using a large design as the centre of the quilt. The fabric Kerrie used is another French General range, 'Lumiere de Noel'. We'll do this class again. It was a beauty.

The new 'Civil War Legacy' quilt girls came this morning for their monthly fix. Their blocks are starting to look great. It was Kris and Jean's first day and already their blocks are really good. Yvonne, Loz and Deb have now had 2 days and are zooming! Loz is believed to be making 2 quilts....there's always one!

A quiet day for retail today...must be the election. People are out but not shopping...maybe its just that the sun is out at last after 5" of rain during the week!

Think I may drop by the DVD store on the way home, for something better on TV rather than election palaver.

New Beginners Class.

I'm back! I've been otherwise busy.. it seems.. and now finally I'm back to the blogging.
A couple weeks ago I attended our guild's Quilt Encounter (Quilt Camp) which is a week long retreat, with international, interstate and local tutors, teaching pretty cool classes. I was lucky to be attending as one of the 2 shops, which are invited. For me, it is a wonderful week of meeting quilters and friends and enjoying each others company. Hi to all those who attended.
I have also just published the latest newsletter. If you would to read it, check out my website and go to newsletter.

Since then I have decided to run this quilt (below) as a new Beginners Class. (so its not in the Newsletter) Beginning on Wednesday 18 August from 10am - 1pm, every fortnight until Xmas. It comes as a kit of fabrics and pattern, so there is no need to fuss with colours. Sewing machine is required too.
We have this new kit 'On Freedoms Wings' available. Using the new 'Lily and Will' fabrics by Bunnyhill Designs it makes these simple stitcheries and applique designs, sophisticated and trendy. Vicki has made this beautiful sample to hang in store.

I know I'm a bit late to welcome Autumn but my favourite season is certainly here. I absolutely love this time of year. My girls get sick of me raving about how beautiful the trees are now, I never get sick of my countryside.
And they love it too. We all went for a long walk on Monday, 4 of us and baby Jemima in the pram. She loved it too, just to keep Nanny Jane happy!
Here are a couple pics of our surrounds. sigh... and my header pic. is the Japanese Maple from our bedroom window.

Haven't posted since our trip to the Australasian Quilt Convention in Melbourne. This is our booth. It was small this year but I think we used our space really well. Lovely to see such lovely people and hi to all who mentioned reading my blogs. We had The Quilted Crow girls opposite us, so we weren't without fun and hilarity. (is that a word?)

Di (look out on the road for her!) and Leanne @ Homespun, the lovely Thread and Ginger girls, Natalie and Karen and not to forget meals and drinks with Di and Sandy from The Quilt Basket. There is always lots of people to bump into every year and it is certainly up there for reasons to attend.

At AQC we launched our 'Pieces of the Past' web sampler program. This is our finished quilt, below- 'Liberty Star'. The blocks have been designed by Michelle Yeo and 9 shops have a block kit for sale. You love our Quilt? Marg Low's Classes

We had a lovely two days with Marg Low as our guest. Friday and Saturday classes were enjoyed by all, Im sure. Marg showed us her samples with her Trunk Show in the morning followed by a pattern buying frenzy. All of us promising to make at least one Xmas project before Xmas!! (we are lucky because somehow there is always another Xmas next year! lol) Here are Rhonda, Shontelle, Vicki, Marg, Kris, Prue and Joanna all hard @ work... All the girls on both days had delicious lunches @ the Lobethal Bakery (next door) which they deserved because their decorated journals were all finished by the end of the day.
Sorry to Yvonne, Nell, Jean, Christine, Jessica, Tracey and tired Cindy (who just did a night shift..) I didn't take a picture on Saturday but you did a wonderful job too.

Marg Low Class

Just a reminder. Marg Low from NSW is coming this week - Friday and Saturday for a one day 'class'. I still have 1-2 spots available..at a push for both days. Marg will show you her trunk show in the morning and in the afternoon, you will make one of these delightful journals.
Marg has a brilliant trunk show... which is a 'show and tell' with samples of her patterns... we will of course have the patterns for sale too. She is also a knowledgable and generous teacher. Marg has been here a few times now and has always been well received and enjoyed.

We are Open Easter Saturday

We have had some fabrics arrive recently I haven't told you about. The gorgeous 'Rural Jardin' being just one. This is my only pic (from French General), sorry this is all the plaids, we have the prints. We also have more Moda being 'Garden Party' by Blackbird designs, 'Verna', 'Bar Harbor' and 'Looking Back' as well as 'Nicey Jane' by Heather Bailey. Lots of pre-cuts. My favourite, 'Lumiere de Noel'. Red and taupe by French General. Being a red lover I do favour this over 'Rural Jardin' which has alot of French blue. Still lovely though. More pre-cuts of 'Fresh Cottons' and 'Whimsy' by Fig Tree and 'A Breath of Avignon' by American Jane as well as the ranges above.

Our Marg Low class is almost full. We have a couple spaces left for the Friday (16 April). Saturday is full. We are making Decorated Journals after Marg's Trunk Show. It proves to be a full day of inspiration with a lovely lady. I have the samples in store for you to see.

I wish you all a Happy Easter. I hope you get alot of sewing done over the long weekend.

Maybe a new cushion (as above using 'Flora and Fauna' by Patty Young) or what about spoiling yourself with a new range of fabric by the bundle!...by the Whimsy Bundle.

I will be open on Easter Saturday 10am - 5pm. Closed Good Friday and the usual days, Sunday and Monday.

Welcome Jemima Sophie

This is my new granddaughter, Jemima Sophie. She was 3 weeks early and came very quickly. 8 months of waiting and when the time comes still doesn't prepare us! We are all in shock, surprise and elation. We can't get enough of her.

Dad has a grin on his face the whole time while Mum is so cool and casual..... so far.... Aunties Olivia and Sarah are over the moon too. We all went shopping yesterday, for pink! Teddy and pink clothes!!! Grandpa just rolls his eyes. With 3 daughters, he's seen it (pink addition) before! Secretly his is rapt and is on the phone to all...even more than usual.

Red Quilts Time

Our first 'Club Rouge' was held today. The girls had a good day and learnt lots and of course, made a cute little red and white quilt. Everyone was in on the theme and either dressed in some red or had some other item eg. bag(s) and shoes. Our day went a little longer than anticipated... like 3 1/2 hrs. longer!!!! Such slow sewers.. no there was a lot to do.. even though it was small.

Thought I would just add some of the 'gorgeousness' I put up with, on my walks. I adore where I live and on every walk am reminded of our glorious country. My favourite season has now arrived, so Im in heaven. I just wish I was outside more....appreciating it....

Here is Sara's 'Le Jardin' quilt. It is beautiful and is hanging in store @ the moment. Patterns are available.

Year of the Red Quilt

Here's a stack for you! The gorgeous 'Civil War Tribute Collection' range by Judie Rothermel.
We are using this range for our 'Pieces of the Past' web sampler. I was going to give you a sneek peek of our quilt but I'm thinking it's still a little early. In a previous post I showed you the blocks... that will have to be enough...let me tell you, if you like repros. this will be hard to pass.
I am actually making a quilt for my pleasure... pleasure may quite not be the word...they are 6" blocks... We have had the class a couple times and what the girls have produced are wonderful so
we had a spare seat, so I have joined the class. This is one of the blocks. I am keeping up, 8 made so far!!! only about 400 to go....no maybe 40!

It's officially the YEAR OF THE RED QUILT, here @ the apple shed anyhow! I have finished a couple of red and white pinwheel cot quilts with another to do, almost completed our '15 stars for 15 years' (shop anniversary quilt) also in 'civil war' red. And we are celebrating with Marg Low's Red Quilt Club.

5 mini quilts to make throughout 2010, varying in size, complexity etc. with different techniques, blocks and layouts. Great for the beginner as well as someone who just loves red or little quilts!

Just thought I would let you guys know, that our first group is full with another being held on Friday afternoon's.

I have decided to also make it a BOM. So you too (in blog land) can still join us! This is Marg's pic of the first quilt. The other 4 will be a mystery!
If you know Marg's work, you will know they will be cute! And she loooves Red too!!! (obviously)

Having my DD1's baby shower on Sunday! Will take some pics to show you, next week. She is due with our first grandbaby in about 8weeks! So be prepared for lots of baby pics rather than quilts!!

We grabbed a Mini Break!

I've been lucky this week, I only worked 3 days! It started with a mini break last 'long' weekend to Mt. Gambier...south of our State. DH had to get away before he did something 'rash' he said.. after such a awful cherry season...
So we enjoyed a bit of shopping, bit of resting, bit of eating and drinking, bit of visiting with friends. What better way of spending a four day break!
We cruised down to Pt. Macdonnell and Nelson one day, after dropping by the Blue Lake. Yes, this is the real colour (during Summer)!!

On Saturday we went to 'A Day On The Green' to see Ronan Keating. With supporting acts, Damien Leith and Tina Arena, at a lovely winery.

We enjoyed a picnic supplied by Vicki and Stuart, good music and great weather. It was hot but once the sun set and the full moon rose behind the stage it was perfect.

If you have ever wondered about the 'Day on the Green'... go .. they are great!

Especially when there is a hot artist on the bill! Ronan is pretty cute!

I know I'm a week late blogging..... but I've been so busy!

I would really like to blog more regularly. I read all these lovely ladies blogs and what they have made or have done but just don't get to blog myself... its not hard.. I don't have to have a photo.. text is fine sometimes... right?....SO the plan is....I will really, really try and blog weekly or at least fortnightly!
Just to let you know or show, things happening.. derr.. that is what a blog is...yeh
Okay, I have just received pics of blocks for our new program (like Quiltaid) 'Pieces of the Past' Web Sampler. There are nine blocks designed by Michelle Yeo and nine shops will have a kit available of one block each, as well as a Finishing Kit. Fabrics used are 'Civil War Tribute Collection'.

We have the new patterns from Red Brolly. 'Animal Crackers' BOM Full set of patterns available @ the moment. Kits will be available soon.

And another quilt kit using 'Hope Valley' by Denyse Schmidt. Pretty nice!
We will have this as display next week. Sara has made a sample. This would be perfect for the trendy home maker or younger relative.

The shed will be open tomorrow. The 'Tour Down Under' passes through but I will be here! Amongst all the bikes.

I have just finished another red pinwheels quilt. Like the one I made for Ruby (past blog).

We will have kits available, once I do the pattern. Not just red either, we will have all sorts of colours.

Well, I'm getting some of my blog list back. What a job....if you were on the list and not now, I would love to hear from you.... most probably the reason being that I haven't got your address...or (sorry) forgotten... Beware! do not press DELETE when not really paying attention!

I received a lovely 'surprise' gift from a good friend for Xmas. A silver 'Brighton' Business Card Case. We were in the States together a few years back, when we both bought some 'Brighton' gear..me a necklace and earrings and (on a another trip) a watch. She has just been to Houston Quilt Market and on her travels, went to Brighton and bought me home this. Gorgeous! During my holidays I actually did finish something.!!! This stitchery of a Sewing Girl. There is a whole series of 'old fashioned' stitcheries like these by Lakadaisies, which I love. I stitched it with Presencia perle thread... not dividing and only one colour. So much easier!! I can see why Red Work is so popular!

Last weekend we did some planting for DD1 and fiancee to get their home ready to sell. Sadly they need to move, to be closer to work. So we planted heaps of Agapanthus around the back and some individual plants out front. And topped them all off with pea straw. Its so good to see action happen with a few hands.

Now with the heat here, they need alot of watering.

We had Chevy as the managing director. The pressure was so much for him, he had to have a nap!!!

Now I'm back to work and feel like I haven't been away...

Here's an angel wishing you all a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
For me it is a time to recharge batteries, with a small break from the shop and enjoy my family and home. Although we are in our busiest time of year with cherries it's still good to be a part of it all. Men in for food and more food... it seems....its no going away on holidays for us.... I do hope to get some lovely sewing done while home. I have so enjoyed it again in the last 6 months.
Recently I have been on about (to my club girls mainly) about my favourite products. Lately I'm in love the Hera Marker. I'm not much of a machine quilter really but while quilting the Pinwheels quilt, (last post) I used this to mark the quilting lines. Just rule lines as you would with a pencil. It leaves a beautiful crease for you to follow. No blue pen or pencil marks ever again! Marvellous! Another product I'm using alot more is the Helmar Basting Spray. No more pins, just sandwich your quilt with the spray adhesive. Easy.

AND the other product I really love is the Roxanne Glue. Especially when I'm doing applique. I'm using it to attach my pies (Pies and Tarts BOM) to their background fabric, instead of pins. Glue around the circle, stick to fabric and stitch around. That is just one use! It's also great to attach your bias strips for applique.

Well, Im about to close the shop and head for home. I will be back here on 5th. January, although I won't be far from my computer and will do some posting.

This is what I'll be tending to while away... the garden.

We have been putting the last of the vegetables in our garden. Here is DH, working madly (he wouldn't keep still for the pic!) We are late this year, so hopefully things will still be okay before Autumn. I think there is still alot of Summer to go!

Tomorrow I'll be making the pavlova for Xmas Day as well as nibbly treats. yeh...

Christmas Cheer

We have had a great couple of weeks, with all our Clubs having Kris Kringle and Christmas break-ups. I must say I am overdosed on sweets! And some lovely KK pressies. This 'Baguette bag', I made for our Apple Piecers group, (pattern from Homespun magazine.) The theme this year was 'bags'.

And this is my present in return, a cute 'champagne bottle' bag. I reckon I can hold two bottles in it, with no worries! Thank you Di, I love it!

I have also just made this cot quilt for my cousin's new granddaughter, 'Ruby Grace', whom we'll see on Christmas Day. I felt it needed to be in red and at the moment, I'm pretty keen on pinwheels. I loved making it, I hope they'll like it too.

Now with the 'shop' rush over, I have a bit of time to do a little bit more shopping and baking next week and I'll be right for Friday! I am open on Tuesday then closed until 5 January. Looking forward to a few quiet days sewing, somewhere in that time.

On the home front, the boys are now full swing with the cherry harvest. The rain being unkind to us again this year. Lots of cracked cherries as well as bird damage. You do wonder, why we do it......in the hope of a good year?? one day....

A 'bag' of a week

I actually have been rather busy, besides preparing all the fabrics (previous post). Friday I joined our class and (finally) made a Market Bag with Sara. Pretty rapt, took it to the pub for dinner that night... looking very squish. No-one commented on it though....
Thought I might make a couple more, for Chrissie pressies. They are great to do. AND I completed another bag this week, for my Kris Kringle with one of my Apple Piecers Clubs. So I just better give you a sneek peak of that one. Had all year to do it! As usual I leave things to the last minute. Better than last year though, I think I was still stitching the day before!

Just unpacked, priced, cut fat quarters (not folded yet) and displayed the new ranges which have arrived this week! This one being 'Meadowsweet' by Sandi Henderson for Michael Miller. We have the Peach collection. This is a wonderful new complete range by Denyse Schmidt, 'Hope Valley'. A beautiful feel to this Free Spirit range- smooth and luxurious...vintage and different. Another fabulous range is 'Civil War Homefront' by Barbara Brackman and Moda. This is a great addition to our reproduction range.
We also have Fat Quarter Bundles of the full range available, jelly rolls and turnovers.

Civil War story quilts

As promised, here are the quilts, the 'Civil War Girls' made on our mini break. This is Sara's original design deplicting the whole Civil War. The flag, colours (north and south), Mississippi River flowing through the fields, slavery, the bloodshed and the Underground railway. I hope this is right (Sara). You all get the gist of it all anyhow. A lovely quilt.

Perhaps this is another good class idea. Lots of quick rotary cutting techniques involved never lone the story factor.

Lots of storms and bad weather bringing lots of rain here in the Hills and S.A. over the last day or two. Flooding, storm damage and broad-acre crop losses have been reported. For a change the Hills weren't too badly off, Adelaide having more rain than us!

Yesterday on my day off, I actually had a few hours of sewing. With the weather like it was, I was only too happy to stay indoors. Can't believe it, I started the quilt for the shop's 15 years of business, '15 stars for 15 years'. I'll take some pics and show you and @ night I'm working on the 'Pies and Tarts'! Will show you some of them too soon. Don't know what's gotten into me!!

CWG retreat

After work on Saturday, I headed off to Victor Harbor for our first CWG retreat. The 'Civil War Girls' had a project designed by Sara to work on, while I HAD to catch up and finish projects. Below is my Layer Cake quilt, using 'Gypsy Rose' fabrics. A little sample to 'show off' the 'Wiscasset' range.

The CWG will have a show n tell on Friday, so I will have some quilt pics to show you.

Next Year, we are planning to have an exhibition of reproduction quilts. So keep a look out!

What a great bunch. I feel I have such close buddies, it was just what I needed and we'll certainly do this again. hey Sare?

Happy Birthday Sarah! This is my baby girl - 20 yesterday! Where has the time gone.
A dear little red haired baby, my smallest, arrived on the due date on a sunny day. I'll never forget DD1 meeting her for the first time (she had a cold and hadn't been able to visit for a day) and as I put the baby in her arms... her little face just lit up and it was love-at-first-sight, she doted on her little sister. They have always got on well. All three do get along well now but of course we've had some moments!
Sarah began the year in the U.S.A. for 2 months. Since returning she had put everything into getting a job and working hard and her mission is saving for a house.

Sarah and Olivia and I went to BTS Cafe (or Better Than Sex) for afternoon tea yesterday. That was Sair's request. As you may have gathered, we love cupcakes and especially the cafes they come from! This one is amazing! An absolute gorgeous store in the city (Adelaide), selling the best cupcakes! A must see here.

Then we came home - that's was all we did! Dinner with all the family and Sarah's bff, Kimberly.

Another era has passed. No teenagers @ home. Congratulations my darling. Wishing you a lifetime of dreams coming true.

'French General' Giftware has arrived.

Just arrived ! 'French General' giftware, all using the 'Rouenneries' fabrics. Gorgeous Sewing Bag, Sewing book, Scissor roll, and Notebook. We have the 'Rouenneries' Honey buns in stock now and waiting for more Jelly Rolls, Fat 1/4 bundles and Layer Cakes. I suppose you think, us Quilt Shop owners sit all day and sew. How wrong are you! How I wish. This is what I've been doing a lot of lately... cutting kits for Quiltaid. This is just a few!

And there.. more to mail out. This is just one kit! We do lots of kit cutting, folding and packing.

Fun hey! Actually I don't mind small doses of kit cutting. eg a new one is fun! Once a few are done it can then be tedious. Oh the hardships!

Now I've said how I don't get time to sew...much. I have had a bit of a spurt on lately. Im doing some 'Pies and Tarts' to show you our Block of the Month. We have two alternatives, clear and crisp colours or other. (which is just not as clear!) I wouldn't go as far as muddy but not as white.

Anyhow, they are really fun to do and Im so enjoying making them. Will show you when I have a few together.

I'm off for a day or two of retreating! Going to Sara's house @ Victor Harbor with the Civil War Girls (girls who are addicted to Civil War type quilts and making them here in the shed, in class).

Should be a nice time and I can get some more Pies made!

A good rain, brings in customers!

Well, while the Power and the Crows are playing, (it can get quiet here-believe it or not!) this post, I thought I would show you some new products in store or coming to the 'apple shed'. This little bag is 'The Fat Quarter bag' pattern by Melly and Me. We have made the sample (thanks Lyn) in the 'Andalucia' fabrics. (btw my ears pricked up the other day, when I heard Hamish and Andy were driving through Andalusia, Alabama- see, we do learn things as quilters!!) Just had news of the release of Gail Pan's first book 'Baskets in Bloom'. It will be here next week for $32.00. Well done, Gail! She would be so excited.

One of our new block-of-the-month's is 'Pies and Tarts' Size: approx. 70" square $35.00 for 10 months Each month for 10 months you will receive enough fabric to make 10 pie blocks and small pie fillers. The first month you will receive "Playing with Paper " Pack 12 (Includes: instructions, perspex templates and papers for month 1) along with your first lot of fabrics.The remaining months you will receive fabric and pre - cut papers.

Well it hasn't been quiet at all, its taken me forever to do this today. Not complaining.

Been madly cutting kits this week, in between writing my newsletter/class list. (out next week).

Quiltaid has me on my toes. Needing more kits still. Which is wonderful. The response has been terrific. More strippy retro kits have been done and a newey, 'Window Boxes'. A very large quilt (76 x 100") in blues, greens and cream flowers. A pretty bed quilt. We have a made sample.

Here is Rosalie Quinlan's new book. This much awaited book and new fabric range is due Sept/Oct. Our Aussie designers, do us proud!

Seeing the radio has just played, 'Choir Girl'. I thought I would add 'him' too. We went to see Jimmy Barnes a week or so ago, yeh I know, again... He just gets better with age! Its so good, he's everywhere at the moment, releasing a new album... radio, TV, on tour. Can't get enough.

Lots of rain here in Woodside as well as Lenswood (home). The highest rainfall in the state. We have just had more thunder bringing more rain today. We would be over 100 mm now this month. Bring it on! I like it when it rains, not only is it good for our apples, cherries, paddocks, rivers etc. it is great for business. In the quilting business rain seems to attract customers to a quilt shop, with the need to shop and sew!

When you visit Hobart next, you must drop by and see The Quilted Crow. The shop is fabulous. And Leonie and Deidre are delightful. We had a delicious lunch with Helen and I hung around for the rest of the day with them. We had a great day.

Got to say, I have never been greeted with a great sign before. It stopped me in my tracks! So special!

Its so nice having great mates in the industry doing the same stuff. Thanks guys! You'll have to visit me next time. Enjoy Houston and see you in Melbourne.

Our time in Tassie has sadly come to an end. It is certainly lovely having time to do... nothing. DH had the cherry industry conference while I pleased myself on my days activities! We did do alot of eating and drinking... and socialising with good friends - that is partly why I go! Looking around being another reason! This trip I did alot of walking too.. the exercise didn't seem to help counteract all the eating though.
The beautiful harbour of Hobart welcomes the traveller with tranquility, as the boats rock gently in their marina. Snow capped Mt. Wellington dwarfs the city but seems to be quietly keeping an eye on things.

I particularly love Battery Point and Salamanca Market. Tasmania being on of the oldest states of Australia has wonderful old architecture, so a wander around the old buildings for me, is heaven. A stop now and again for a cappucino is a must for the weary walker who is sooo out of condition.

Christmas in the Hills was a special time of indulgence. The ladies enjoyed the gathering, with lovely stitching and friendship. Lots of goodies to eat, to buy, enjoy or win! My dear Sarah DD3, has been busy making pinwheels for the goodie bags for ages. (one of Rosalie's patterns in her 'Gift' book) All three girls did a wonderful job, helping me out with preparations while Sara ran the shop so well, leaving me to be able to 'swan' around and enjoy and chat to everyone!

One lucky lady, Sandi even won a bundle of Rosie's new fabric range. Take a look, its gorgeous. We will have the range, as soon as possible. Possibly around end of year, once its released. Why not pre-order a fat quarter bundle now!

Melly and Me's book has arrived!

Have received our first delivery of Melly's first book 'Kaleidoscope'. Well done, Mel. Loads of photos with wonderful patterns . If you have little ones, this book is a must, even if you don't there are some quilt designs and bags as well of lots of inspiration!
Sometimes customers are after the exact fabric from the book and/or patterns. While the fire is hot, I thought I would let you know, the more 'unusual' fabrics we have which Mel has used in some of her projects.
1. 'Robo pack' -numbers fabric.
2. The fun 'Fiesta' bag, we have the funky main fabric of sewing notions. (I might need one of those!)
3. The traffic fabric on 'Melvin's' overalls also.
Now I guess you just need the book, just order one from our website www.patchworkapple.com.
Had to use Mel's photo, hope that is okay, my camera has gone to China for a holiday.
Today I have ordered a new range, 'Whimsy'. This is not delivered for a few months yet but thought I would whet the appetite.... Seeing my camera is having a good time without me in China. I'm borrowing other's pictures for this blog!

Look out for my next blog, it will be my 50th! Seeing I've turned 50 too (in March), maybe I will celebrate with a giveaway. No I don't think there will be 50 prizes - maybe something worth 50c !!!!! LOL I will give it some thought, until then.

The pressure has eased...

Well the 'deadline' has been met and I can reveal the quilt. This is our Quiltaid 2009 quilt, which will be launched in June @ the Quilt Show in Sydney. Part proceeds go to the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital in Ethiopia. 12 Aussie designers have designed blocks and 12 Aussie shops will have a block kit for you to purchase. The finishing kits are available too. If you like the way we completed our quilt, you purchase the kit from us. We have framed each block with a folded mini border, the sashings have a stitchery leaf and berry design, completing the quilt with a scallop outer border. Our block kit is by Rosalie Quinlan (bottom left corner) Go to here for ALL the info.
I have been actually sewing in my 'new' (I left and now come back) sewing room. Its lovely, my 'stuff' around me, with the radio/cd's on or the TV. I even found a board for my design board (I used to use the pool table board/cover but its really too heavy.) It does make a difference when you can see the project you're working on, easily. I leave things there and bit by bit, it grows. Photo isn't fantastic..ever tried to take a picture of a room? Well its a space for me at least. Now I just need the time to use it..

This little quilt has been finished. 'Sweet Dreams' is a Nine patch block with yo-yos in the spacer blocks.. using a honey bun roll. My photos aren't great in colour. I used the 'Sweet' range by Moda. It is young, fresh and retro.

Bookings are now coming in for our 'Christmas in the Hills' gathering with Rosalie Quinlan and Leanne Beasley in July. Don't leave it too long to decide. You will be in for a treat - this will be Special. Here is Leanne's sneak peek of one of her projects. We are so looking forward to this weekend. Both girls will have 2 projects for you with a Xmas theme. Starter kits included in cost.

Back on the home front, my DH is off to China on Monday for cherry business with apple harvest over and on Wednesday we have a visitor from France, staying for 5 weeks. She will be working for us (even with DH away...)...Good timing on his behalf! Our workmen apparently will be in charge. Thats a worry too!! Still lots of work to do, even with the harvest finished for the year. These cold, mild days are excellent for outdoor jobs which need to be done before rains (hopefully) in July. By the way, the only way you 'consumers' get good cherries is due to cold days. So we really need the winter chill.

On that note, I better get back to some more sewing using a 'Gypsy Rose' layer cake. This is so much fun! Photos of that next time.

Sooo 'Sweet' has arrived! I have been waiting for this fabric. I just love it! And I am making yo-yos from it for a quilt and need more fabrics. Although that project has been put on hold for the moment. Other pressing items on the agenda! see below (Pic: Quilt hanging is a kit with Jelly Rolls and Sweet rolls in 'Sweet' too.) ---sorry not sure why the underline, it seems to have disappeared off the toolbar? 1. 'Christmas in the Hills' is organised for 25 and 26 July with Rosalie Quinlan and Leanne Beasley. More info will be on my website. This will be a wonderful weekend, with 2 very talented young women who make and design the 'best stuff'!!

Had a few arrivals lately.

More cute stuff in the way of a 'Sweet Box'. 2 'honey bun' rolls of 10 strips x 1 1/2" wide. Includes a pattern to make a bag from one roll. These are a limited edition.

And some more gorgeous fabrics, 'City Blooms'. I know alot of you loved 'City Girl' well this is Kitty Yoshida's next range. Just a couple to show you the colours. Blue, chocolate, mauvey pink and green.

And @ home- DD3 (darling daughter #3) -someone asked me the other day, they presumed DD was darling daughter. Well, this one surely is (they all are really). She has just finished painting our whole house! What a fantastic job and well done too. The house feels so fresh and clean, which it is, seeing every cupboard (nearly) has been emptied and repacked AND with less going back in!

Even the kitchen cupboards have been painted, these were baltic pine!

Painting or any type of renovating brings with it the need to purchase and upgrade new fittings etc. don't you think? New bedside lamps are required, book shelf, duel flush toilets too, kitchen taps and probably a white or chrome microwave instead of an old 20yr. old brown version - how can the paintwork look so good with daggy accessories!!! I know they all still work and nothing is really wrong with them but the colour/style?!! But some things are necessary!! So we may need to visit here or here! Carpet is another thing but just because it's faded, doesn't mean it needs replacing or so DH says.... yeh ok..

I'll do a tour over the (my) long weekend. (TPA is closed on Saturday due to Anzac Day) and take some pics of the new joint! This will be in between my mad sewing!

The house is in turmoil!

Here are some pictures of my birthday 'party'. My brother and family came with us to the pub for dinner and the girls made chocolate fondue for dessert @ home, instead of cake. (they've been wanting fondue for ages).

So instead of a hideous chocolate mud cake, I blew out my candles on the fruit for the fondue. Different but fun! The others hadn't ever had chocolate fondue before, so they enjoyed it too.

Here are just some of the gorgeous flowers I received from DH before disaster struck our house.

.... the house is being painted by our very Darling DD3,who is doing a fantastic job. My sewing room has been done, the lounge, 2 girls rooms, their bathroom and toilet. Our bedroom is next, then the ensuite, laundry, the 'big' room/pool room and finally the kitchen. (which will be a big job, cupboards to do). You forget how difficult it is (even though Im not the one painting!) but the moving and unpacking and rearranging and repacking and throwing out 'stuff' and talk about 'stuff'. Where does it all come from and why? Really.. I must say its good to have a 'spring clean' (in Autumn) with curtains being washed and carpets shampooed too. Its certainly been a few years! Too many really.

So our house looks like a bomb hit it, today. Two girls are sleeping in the lounge and the office, while everything from our bedroom is in the lounge even flowing into the laundry!!! Where we sleep tomorrow night is anyone guess! I will try and get some new lovely pictures to show you the new colours. The girls rooms colours are lovely.

The shop is open this Easter Saturday by the way. Don't be put off with the Oakbank Races traffic.

We'll be busy over Easter otherwise. DH will be picking apples some days, with pipes to lay for DD1 and finance's house, lunch @ home on Sunday (not sure just where?) and oh! ...perhaps a bit of .....painting!

Okay, okay.... thought I would let you know after all. Its my birthday today. Its my big birthday actually... 50... no point hiding it anymore... I can hear you all now... wow you'd never think!!!!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all my special friends for their lovely wishes (and gifts)... even the postie gave me a cherry ripe! Man.. word gets around!

My dear friends from Tassie even sent a huge arrangement of flowers, choccies and Moet!!!!!
Can't wait to get home and get stuck into that! Thank you ever so much Darren and Susan and hope to see you in August if not before.
I shouldn't really single out people but they are a far away....and we don't see each other much.

My 3 girls came to the shop for lunch. They also organised a special dinner tonight and another on Sunday, with family. So that will all be lovely.

Moments like this though I do miss Mum and friend Annette, who aren't with me now, to share my big day. I remember what they did for my 40th. wow! All I can do is remember the good times we had and enjoy what wonderful family and friends I have now.

New Studio - in the making!

Well this is going to be my studio again!!!! DD1 and fiance have left home, cleaned up their room and gone to live in their beautiful newly built home. I am so excited to have room again but I must say, I do miss them, already... DD3 is going to be our painter extradinaire due to the fact she isn't working at present, so my time is ticking until the painting is finished. Notice the gorgeous honan matting? We bought that 30 years ago when we first built the house! Can't complain about the durablity of $1 sq ft. product back then! Nanna's rug and matting has gone straight to the dump!

I will fill you in as painting is completed.

Well Ive unpacked from the AQC (Australasian Quilt Convention) in Melbourne and just about back to normal. A broken cupboard in transit, for the trouble, though.
Was lovely to catch up with so many customers and fellow shop owners.

My DD3 has returned from the US (yes, already) She was very home sick, so fine we're happy for her to return. She's back and running, raring to go. DH and Shayne got stuck into clearing some dead gum trees on the weekend. So us girls were the ones to clean up and drag/cart branches and wood, to the respective burn pile or wood heap. So much for a holiday weekend.

Here we are, at the Australiasian Quilt Convention in the Royal Exhibition Building in sunny Melbourne. If you were thinking of visiting, why not do-yourself-a-favour (as Molly's says) and come on in and have a look around.

Plenty of quilt shops and quilts for your eyes to feast on.

Speaking of feasting, while here we had a sensational meal on Lyon Street, last night. Man the choice of food here is incredible. Here are our desserts! If we keep this up, I will not be able to fit behind the counter!

A Day on the Green & Shrinking Sheet

On the weekend we went to see 'Simply Red', Kate Cebrano and Dragon at 'A Day on the Green' in the Barossa Valley. It was a terribly hot and windy day but the change was moving in by the time the concert started making it a wonderfully warm evening. We amazingly found a friend in the crowd (Yvonne) and enjoyed a fantastic night. I loved 'Simply Red' and felt I could stay
forever.

Have had a go at the shrinking sheet which has arrived in store. I cross hatched 3 layers, using the shrinking sheet as the backing. Then took it to the steam iron and steamed. And voila! it puffed up! Its fun! For little purses/makeup bags, or just bags would be great. Sorry pictures are around the wrong way. After and then before...Believe it or not, the fabric is the same colour too.

Victorian Bushfires

My thoughts are with all my friends in Victoria suffering with the horrible bushfires, still burning at present. These are the worst bushfires Australia has ever seen, with perhaps hundreds of lives lost, hundreds of hectares of land and hundreds of houses and animals gone.

We're having a Heat Wave!

We are having a HEAT WAVE!!! Okay enough is enough, thats all now, it can rain now.... Is anyone listening - that can help me??? I guess not, theres no point whingeing.... We had our hottest day for 70 years on Wednesday (45C) and since then we have had 44 and 43 blah blah blah until next week. When its hot its hot, I reckon- whether its 43 or 45 it makes no difference...As you can see our usually busy street is even quiet. And the temp. gauge @ home shows the top mercury which was the maximum @ our place. Not much more mercury to go on the gauge! And we are probably the coolest place is the state of South Australia! I honestly feel for the rest of you guys, in hotter regions.

My shop is fantastic with the air con. but we don't have air con. @ home. Even with a double brick house with lots of trees, its just too hot now. Is there an air conditioning firm which can put in air con. today? not likely....then I suppose we will lose power...

Sorry is that enough of a whinge? To make it so bizarre my DD3 is in the snow in New Jersey. She has on 2 pairs of tights, 2 pairs of socks, 2 singlets, 2 jumpers, coat, gloves and a hat. Man I feel worse thinking about it!

Anyhow that is what is happening in our part of the world.

This is our latest table runner class in retro fabrics, 'Hello Betty'. Made from a charm pack. Also a class will be ready for later in the year, using a Sweet Roll. I've used 'Sweet' in retro colours too. We are having a retro splurge at the moment. I just love the 'Sweet' range. Class photo is of the Market Bag. Very popular bag class.

We had the Tour Down Under ride past us on Wednesday. This is the flash of colour! It was a lovely day weatherwise. Almost made me want to take off.... not on a bike though.

Have finally done the Newsletter/Class List. It was lovely yesterday, Vicki and Sara were here to fold and fold and I got them in the mail. Otherwise it takes me forever....Special thanks to Vicki, who gave up her day to help. You can view it on my website.

There are lots of exciting happenings this year. This year is TPA's 15th. birthday so we are having celebrations all year. The big event of the year, is Rosalie Quinlan and Leanne Beasley coming for our July Gathering, 'Country Christmas in July' on 25 + 26 July. More details still to finalise. Names can be put on a list for us to contact later.

Sorry this is all over the place. I can never get the photos to match the writing.

DD3 is very homesick and has decided to head on home. Its a bit of a shame but we all feel better now we know she is coming home, knowing how she was feeling. She has a lovely family but its just not for her.

Such a busy time

Well finally I feel like writing something. Had a couple weeks off this year. Lovely but no sewing done (as would have liked) but lots of other 'stuff' happening. Firstly DD3 left for the USA on Monday as an au-pair. Very emotional build up, never lone @ the airport... She had a bad trip including missing the connecting flight from LA to New York (we knew 2 1/2 hrs. was not going to be enough time- airlines think they know better..yeh) And she's really missing home and wants to come home.. sniff...We are doing lots of positive 'encouragements' but it just tears my heart out knowing she's sad. Today her email is a little more positive and she is eating again. We are sure once she is with her family, she will be okay. Dawn (her surrogate mum) has been sending her lovely emails, so I feel (a bit) happier.

Last Saturday, DD1 and finance` had their engagement party. At least it took our minds off DD3 leaving. The party was a success and enjoyed by all. It was held outside on a balmy evening, for 90 guests (33 metres of table runners!!-good job mum has a quilt shop heh?) and with hundreds of twinkle lights overhead and on the tables, it was a fairyland.

December was so busy, we had 2 birthday dinners, DD3's Farewell party, an Engagement party, a cherry industry dinner, oh and Xmas x 2(with 2 families), New Years and a partridge in a pear tree!!! phew..
No wonder I am not in the mood for much. I think I need another holiday!

I now have to organise this year's program. Its in the head but getting it organised and on paper is another thing. One of the worst jobs, I reckon for a quilt shop owner- this one anyway. Im sorry that doesn't seem too professional but its the darn truth. Hey my emotions at present are very raw!!

Have made 3 salads for Xmas lunch and dinner(doubled all recipes)- bestest pasta salad, chick peas and cranberries and jellied pineapple and carrot. 2 pavlovas which will have huge strawberries, my special garlic dip, and a cauliflower au gratin. Tomorrow will get the turkey on early, to go with the free-range ham - better be the best we've ever had- what I paid for it!!! As well as Xmas pudding. DD3 had the 'beats crankin''(carols) all afternoon while she set the table, hulled strawberries and general helping.

Lunch tomorrow is with our family and Dad (7) with dinner @ my cousins in the city. This year is a bit quieter than normal, my brother and family are away, the aunties etc. are getting a bit old now and stay home. The weather looks to be 31C which is perfect. It won't be the same this year, it will be the first year without Mum, so we will be a bit lost.

We will remember the good times @ Xmas and wish she was still here.

Sorry I haven't posted for awhile. We've had a bad time of it lately. Firstly we had 2" of rain and just about ruined our cherry crop. DH is very disheartened but certainly doesn't say die! 80% damage but will pick a few after Xmas. Its not so much losing the fruit (it is) but its the time spent all year working towards the crop in Dec. Its such a high risk product, generally having a good season every 5 years. I am as my DH, fifth generation apple/cherry growers and I still find it hard to understand, why primary producers keep at it. Then during the summer we have to 'stretch' the water for the apple crop in Feb/Mar. Weird isn't it..

The day it rained I spent in bed, with gastro then DH has had it most of the week-of course it was alot worse than my 'bout'... why is that? DD1 has had it too, hopefully thats all. A great week....not. I'm now back on track, not losing any weight and eating normally again, thank goodness, this time of year is all about food.. isn't it?

Our town next door, Lobethal has the Xmas Light Festival. So far I have been in twice, for a look around the busy main street and of course a drive around the town to view all the houses and their Chrissie lights everywhere and I mean everywhere!! Some houses are massed with lights! So pretty. For as long as I remember we have to go in and 'look at the lights'. Its a tradition. As a kid, Mum and Dad would drive us around after the pageant, more recently we would bundle the girls in the car and have a look see. The girls even go in during the weeks on their own (or with friends). The pageant on Tuesday night is of course, compulsory. The Woodside pageant is on Monday night which is fantastic too.

We had Sarah's farewell party on Sunday. DD3 is off to USA for 13mths. as an au pair in New Jersey. It was a lovely party although Im not looking forward to the day of departure... at all. She has 3 children to look after and will love it. I will keep you posted on her venture. It will be 'therapy' for a lost mum.

Last day of work today, as Loz said to me, 'we're taking the rest of the year off!' I'll be back for business on the 6 Jan. It will be lovely just being home (especially with DD3) but with DD1's Engagement Party and Xmas and New Years all happening, not sure there will be too much sewing and resting.

Olivia turns 23!

'Tea Cosy, Tea Party' Class was held on Saturday with a lovely industrious group. Tea/coffee was sipped and cupcakes enjoyed while yo-yos and frills were churned out!

I actually expected more sipping and munching, than the amount of sewing that was generated. The gingham(with frills along the bottom - hidden) is Janelle Wind's pattern, while the Iced Yo-Yo Tea Cosy is mine.

Before our ' Tea Party' began I felt so special to be invited to lunch with the lovely Vicki, Yvonne and Gerrie. Not very often I get out of the shop so it was so nice to be able to sit and enjoy.

DD2 turned 23 on Monday, the 1st. December. 1st day of Summer and it feels like Xmas... so that means putting up the tree. 'Its my birthday not Xmas'.. we hear. I actually did put up the tree on Sunday but told her not to look until after her birthday.... She didn't have a real pleasant day, health-wise but cheered up for the cake! I always say, cake helps!!

She's been to TAFE all year and has just got a job, so her life begins in her career choice as a Beauty Therapist.

We are having another Market Bag Class on Friday 12 December 10am-1pm. These have been really popular and ideal for gifts for Chrissy. The girls usually get one completed with another one on the way.

The biggest highlight at this year's Quilt Market (for shop owners), was meeting Amy Butler. She is so delightful as well as so clever and inspirational. I sat in on 2 of her presentations as well as chatted for ages with her @ the end of Saturday's market. She kindly signed a copy of her 'Midwest Modern' book for me also. Her longer presentation was about her and her family; David and 3 cats, her home(s) and her designing. The full room was silent, listening to every lovely word she said while watching her wonderful video.

Throughout the days, I saw some great new fabrics especially Amy Butler's Midwest Modern II as well as Moda's newies (of course). My favourite being a retro, 'Sweet' by Urban Chiks. We have in stock new Layer Cakes in 'Sweet', 'Flag Day Farm' and 'Urban Couture'. Jelly Rolls and the new Sweet Rolls (1 1/2" strips) in 'Sweet' and Charm Packs in 'Flag Day Farm' and 'Soiree'. Keep a look out for the 'honey buns' - 2 mini 'sweet rolls' in a box with pattern! Devine! Limited though.

We now have some pre-cut bindings on the roll (which I've been thinking about for ages..).

Another highlight was chatting with the Creative Abundance gang. A great booth full of new inspirational gear from Rosalie Quinlan, Gail Pan, Leanne's House, Melly and me, Lynette Anderson, Cinderberry Stitches, Candlelight Creations and Janelle Wind.

Pattern Press was always busy too. Helen Stubbings, now with 'The Quilted Crow' girls and 'One Red Robin'. These delightful girls are always good for a chat! Not forgetting Marg Low, Kerry Guillespe and the gang from The Birdhouse and Hatched and Patched.

One of the busiest booths was Highland Quiltworks, selling masses of Amy's books! As well as XLN selling her fabrics and having her signing her books. Madness!

We have a wonderful industry, with delightful people. So nice to catch up with good friends and acquaintances. Especially nice to have a surprise visit by Deb from Geelong. Such a dag!

She's arrived and in great shape! DH found this little sweety in the States, so she has come a long way to join our family. We have both been in love with Mustangs like.... forever, now our dream has come true! We are so lucky to have her, she's a beauty.

One problem... I have to go to Melbourne for the weekend (trade show). Well I suppose, its a good chance for her to bond with her dad...

Had a lovely day yesterday. Delivered my brother and sister-in-law to airport (they're off to Italy...) We are minding my nephew, Alex (12) for the 2 weeks while they're gone. Waved the plane goodbye and enjoyed a much needed coffee and hot choccys @ Cocolat. When boys of 12 are sad, we always apply food!!

DD2 is training as a Beauty Therapist so DD3 and Alex(!) and I enjoyed a couple of hours there, having a facial and makeup. (for her prac.) Very nice, wish I could do it every week. Sadly I've been trying for ages and now she has only a couple weeks left... DD3 and DD2 even 'encouraged' Alex to try on some wicked blue falsh eyelashes, only for a minute or two.
Being our wedding anniversary (29th) I kept the makeup on.

Now I have some unpacking to do... Procrastination is major! After I post by blog, after a coffee, after I sort the mail.... I'm heaps better when I do it asap. Gotta get it done before tonight. We have our Xmas Cheer Club, so we might need a clear table to work on!

Had a good time @ the Quilt Fair. Always nice to see familiar faces walking by! No of course not, everyone drops by and at least says hi!
Big week this week. Is one supposed to rest with 'shingles'. Not a chance. Just keep taking the pills... Xmas Cheer Club tonight, Beginners Class tomorrow night, with BOM needing to be sent. Big day Friday. Prepare for Melb. Trade show, take my DAd to Dr. in arvo and early evening attend a concert on the river banks of Mannum with Adam Brand and Jimmy Barnes!!! Then early morning flight to Melb. for trade show for weekend. Attend lectures and hopefully meet Amy Butler. Perhaps order a few things..
Well the time has come. Boxes here I come...

Well I'm set up and ready for action! That is ready for the Adelaide Craft and Quilt Fair ... starting tomorrow. Setting up today was a lot quicker than usual. Had help from DH (with carting of the gear) and DH3 (with setting up). DH at the moment is very helpful because I have shingles. He's had them and knows exactly how painful they are. I was diagnosed on Monday... which I said to the Dr. was such good timing.... not....
So long as I keep up the pain killers, Im fine.
Anyhow I think my booth, looks really pretty. Come on by and say hi! Booth E14. We have lots of new kits, patterns and fabrics.

Newsflash!

DD 1 and boyfriend for 5 years announced yesterday, they are getting married. At last! (we all said..) They are building a house, so we were hoping 'wedding bells' were in the future. Not until Nov. 2010 though. Mainly due to the fact DD3 is away in the US all next year and Nov. is a lovely time for a garden wedding, we have to wait. Thank goodness, I say. Will have to save now...

'Gathering in the Hills'

Sorry people, its been days since the 'Gathering' but finally Im here to tell you about our day on Sunday. Helen Stubbings did a superb job passing on her knowledge and the girls learnt the technique of colourque as well as perfecting their stitching. Thanks to Sarina for her delicious food, including cupcakes, butterfly cakes and heart-shaped lamingtons and jelly cakes (and that was just morning tea!). While Im at it, thanks go to my girls for their help, it wouldn't have been half as good, thanks Jessica and Sarah, as well as Sara on the day.

Bloggers Kris, Loz and Marcia all met for the first time, sat together and got on 'like a house on fire'. Stuff like this is very special and Im glad Im a part of that. Its so nice to see so many lovely people all enjoying themselves and the craft we love.

Getting ready for our 'Gathering in the Hills'. All excited with everything now coming together. We are really going over the top, so be prepared! A sneek peek of what I made yesterday while I was waiting for our Xmas Cheer Club girls to arrive. Obviously very easy to make! So thrilled how it worked out, using the laminated fabric and jumbo ric-rac, I might make more!

'Neenies Garden' quilt arrived yesterday too. Designed by Helen Stubbings, and is our new Block of the Month.

Must fly, some big boxes have just been delivered from Moda. New flannels in 'Butterfly Fling', 'Charisma' and 'Woodland Bloom'. Others are 'Butterfly Fling' (regular cotton) and 'Harvest Home'. Bit of work now to unpack, catalogue and find ROOM!!!

Cherry Blossom Time

The first day of daylight saving, in the evening, we went to check out the cherry blossom. DH said it was impressive this year and when one is a cherry grower, we have to see these things and look interested. Not really hard, it is beautiful to see. Bonus points for interested wife!!!

So I took lots of pictures! (can't work out how to display them nicely on this post though, sorry.. I bet its something very easy...) ... now my font icon has disappeared...

Had a wonderful Monday, I was able to sew all day! Can't tell you what I was sewing, (its a surprise for our 'gathering') but I am so rapt and excited! I have a bit of a sewing 'bug' at the moment. I want to keep at it but as well know, 'life' gets in the way...

Lots of preparations are happening for next Sunday's 'Gathering in the Hills'. So I had better get back to it!

Iced Yo-Yos are done!

The 'Apple Cobbler' quilt arrived yesterday from Helen. It is gorgeous and looks so good on the wall! Bookings are filling so if you are interested in coming to our 'Gathering in the Hills' contact me.

I have finished my Yo Yo tea cosy for our class on Sat. 29 Nov. - make a tea cosy or coffee plunger cover and enjoy a delicious afternoon tea of cupcakes. I thought I might make another one (madness?) using Amy Butler's range for a real 'funky cosy'.

DH and I went to watch the Bay to Birdwood run, go through Gumeracha on Sunday. Most years we go to watch the old cars, trucks, utes and bikes go by. A lovely few hours spent. A great band plays as we sit in the pleasant sunshine and wave to the traffic! This year was the vintage cars with the classics next year (which I love!) We hope we can drive our 1966 Mustang next year!!

Had a lovely visit from my 2 best friend 'bloggers'. On Tuesday granny loz and her friends stayed awhile!! Yesterday Kris, 2 daughters and grand baby dropped by. So nice to see DDno.2 home from the US and of course DDno.1 and baby.

Granny loz told me to show you all, the Valdani Threads. They are gorgeous! Just as I was getting that photo, a delivery arrived with the new 'Daisy Chain' fabrics by Amy Butler. Only 6 so far to show you. So thought I would show these off too!

Am doing a spot of sewing, trying to finish a yo-yo tea cosy! I am soooo good at starting projects but finishing!!! Also am doing the first block of 'Butterfly Garden' BOM. Show you that when completed. (block 1 that is).

This blogging really get one in!!! I want to just keep going and do no work!

I do like Mondays!

Mondays are my 'day off'. Generally full with 'stuff' eg. visiting my Dad, work appointments, banking, housework inc. washing, drying and folding (I don't iron much now) and the boring food shopping. Not much left for a movie or a bit of a sew? DDno.3 usually wants to do 'something', seeing she is home Mondays too. This week I said ..... what will happen will happen .. I don't care. So I did the compulsary washing and drying and headed off to the hairdresser! That was my day. (besides some computer work... which was 'supposed' to be quick!) It was a terrible day, weather-wise. Windy, hail and cold. So I enjoyed my 'flash' of a day, which is NEVER long enough.

'Gathering in the Hills' with Helen Stubbings

Here is the quilt, Helen will be teaching @ our Gathering. It looks so pretty using the 'Posh' range of fabrics. Her colourque technique is the centre Medallion block. It is being quilted now and should be in store on show very soon. Book now to join us.

We have just received all the gorgeous fabrics 'Sweet Escape' for the Block of the Month, 'Neenies Garden'. Have started cutting ready to send out. The colours are the same as the photo.

Thought I would show you some new fabrics. 'Farmers Market' by Michael Miller is so pretty. Haven't made anything but have ideas!! BUT we have a new 'Funky Teens' quilt kit using the Alexander Henry range in orange, black, yellow, blue and green.

A re-arrange I said. I wasn't expecting to do such a change! My DD suggested we move the counter.. it all then went pear shaped! No I guess not exactly 'pear shaped' but you know, you move one thing so another needs moving and so on... but I love the outcome!!!

Well the SALE is nearly over, making room for new fabrics etc. and a re-arrange. I keep saying I'm going to re-arrange but it might not happen exactly how Im thinking. It's all about room!! Lovely to see many of my 'faithful' customers.

Just had the 'Civil War Legacy' quilt quilted, now ready to hand sew the binding. It's been ready for awhile, then my visitors arrived and still the quilt sits.... maybe tomorrow.

It has been such an enjoyable class, we'll have it again next year. Sara has lots of snippets of history about the 'Civil War' to share as you stitch. Her sample is in blue and beige, so nice and different to this pink, green and brown.
